Creaking, clicking or similar noises from a bed do not always come from the mattress itself. Wear within the spring system, loose bed base or frame connections, an uneven support surface and general deterioration after long-term use can all cause different types of noise. For this reason, identifying the source requires checking not only the mattress surface but also the entire support system beneath it. Sounds that appear when someone moves or changes position in bed may be linked to springs, joints or support points that shift under pressure.

To identify the source more accurately, it can be useful to separate the mattress from the bed base or frame and inspect each part individually. If the mattress remains quiet on a firm, level surface but makes noise when placed back on the bed base, the problem may be coming from the support system. If the sound continues to come from inside the mattress, wear in the springs or other internal components may be involved. The spring system, layer construction and materials used by a mattress manufacturer can influence how a product behaves over time, but not every noise that develops should automatically be considered a manufacturing defect. The age of the mattress and the condition of the supporting surface should also be taken into account.

Wear in Mattress Springs

One possible cause of noise in a sprung mattress is wear within the spring system. Over time, repeated pressure can cause metal components to move differently or create friction at connection points, which may result in creaking or metallic sounds. If a noise repeatedly comes from the same area of the mattress, particularly when weight is applied, the internal spring system may need closer attention. However, the presence of springs does not mean that every sound necessarily comes from them, as bed bases and frames can produce very similar noises.

The durability of a spring system can vary according to the type of steel used, spring design, connection method and the way the mattress is used. Different systems offered by Turkey mattress manufacturers, including Bonnell springs, pocket springs and other spring constructions, do not all behave in the same way. If noise is accompanied by visible deformation, a noticeable loss of support or localised sagging, the overall condition of the mattress should be assessed rather than focusing on the sound alone.

Loose Bed Base and Bed Frame Connections

Many noises that seem to come from the mattress are actually caused by loose connections in the bed base or frame. Screws, bolts, corner joints and wooden connection points can gradually loosen with regular use. When someone sits on the bed or changes position during the night, these parts may rub against one another and produce creaking or clicking sounds. If the location of the noise changes when pressure is applied to different parts of the bed, checking the frame connections can be particularly useful.

Bed frame and base connections should be inspected periodically, and loose components should be tightened appropriately. Wooden parts can also be checked for cracks or deformation, while metal supports should be examined for bending or movement. Connections should not be overtightened, as excessive force can damage some materials. If the noise comes from the frame rather than the mattress, maintaining or repairing the support system may solve the problem without replacing the mattress.

An Unsuitable or Uneven Support Surface

An uneven floor can also cause a bed or mattress system to make noise. Small differences in floor level may prevent one of the bed frame legs from making full contact with the ground, allowing the frame to flex slightly when someone moves on the mattress. This movement can create friction between wooden or metal connections. If a bed makes noise in one part of the room but becomes quieter when moved to a more level surface, the floor may be contributing to the problem.

The bed base, frame or slatted support beneath the mattress should also be suitable for the mattress construction. Slats that are spaced too far apart or support points that sit at different heights can prevent weight from being distributed evenly. Over time, this may contribute not only to noise but also to unwanted changes in the mattress surface. Using the mattress on a level, stable and manufacturer-recommended support system is important for both comfort and long-term performance.

Wear Caused by Long-Term Use

Mattresses are continuously exposed to body weight, movement and repeated pressure throughout the night, so gradual wear is expected over time. Foam layers may lose some of their resilience, the spring system may no longer perform as it once did, or friction may develop between internal components. In some mattresses, these changes can become noticeable as noise. If the sound is accompanied by sagging, reduced support or a clear change in comfort, the issue may involve more than noise alone.

There is no single number of years after which every mattress will begin to make noise. Material quality, frequency of use, body weight, the type of bed base and general maintenance can all influence how quickly a mattress wears. A new or minor noise can first be investigated by checking the bed base, frame and connections. If the sound becomes progressively louder and there are also noticeable changes in the mattress's support, a more thorough assessment of its overall condition may be needed.
