What Should You Consider When Moving a Mattress?

Dijitanya Ajans |

When moving a mattress, the first thing to consider is the most suitable handling method for its construction. Foam, hybrid, sprung and pocket spring mattresses may all respond differently during transport. Some foam mattresses may tolerate a limited amount of controlled flexing, while excessive bending can damage the internal structure of sprung mattresses. If the manufacturer provides specific transport or storage instructions, these should be checked before moving the mattress. Its size and weight, the floor it is being moved from, the width of staircases and lifts, and the available space inside the transport vehicle should also be assessed in advance. With larger double mattresses in particular, planning the route beforehand can help reduce both the risk of damage and the chance of accidents during handling.

Before transport, all sheets, mattress protectors, toppers and other bedding should be removed, and the mattress should be clean and completely dry before it is packed. Leaving a damp mattress inside plastic packaging for a prolonged period can lead to odour and moisture problems. The mattress should not be dragged, allowed to scrape against sharp corners or door frames, or handled in an uncontrolled way. Where possible, it should be carried evenly by two or more people. Pulling heavily on the edges, using side handles to bear the full weight when they are designed only for positioning, or sliding the mattress down stairs can damage both the outer fabric and the internal structure.

How Should a Mattress Be Packed?

Before packing a mattress, make sure that the surface is dry and free from obvious dirt or dust. If possible, allow it to air briefly before wrapping it. One of the most practical options is to use a thick, durable mattress bag or protective cover large enough to enclose the entire mattress. The packaging should cover all surfaces, including the underside and edges, without leaving exposed areas. The opening can be secured with strong tape, but the tape should not be applied directly to the mattress fabric. For longer journeys, additional protection around the corners can help reduce the risk of scuffing during loading and unloading.

Although plastic packaging can help protect a mattress from dust and the outside environment, it may not be ideal on its own for long-term storage. If the mattress is going to be stored for several months, the manufacturer's storage guidance should be followed and damp, poorly ventilated areas should be avoided. For a move lasting only a few hours or days, a strong mattress bag will usually provide suitable protection. Because the outer fabric can become dirty if the packaging tears, the strength and thickness of the protective cover matter. Using a purpose-made, durable mattress bag is generally more reliable than wrapping the mattress in several layers of very thin stretch film.

How Should a Double Mattress Be Moved?

Double mattresses are usually too large and heavy to move safely by one person. Before moving one, check the width of doors, corridors, staircases and lifts along the route. It is important to plan a path that allows the mattress to pass through these areas without excessive bending. Two people can usually carry the mattress from opposite sides along the longer edges, while heavier or deeper models may require a third person for additional support. Carrying a mattress upright in a way that completely blocks the carrier's view can increase the risk of losing balance on stairs, so movements should remain controlled.

When loading a double mattress into a vehicle, heavy furniture, appliances or sharp-edged boxes should not be placed on top of it. Keeping the mattress bent at a tight angle for a prolonged period, or compressing it between other items, may lead to loss of shape. Wherever possible, it should be positioned flat and evenly supported inside the vehicle. If the manufacturer allows the mattress to be transported upright on its side, this may be suitable for shorter journeys, but it should be secured properly and prevented from falling over. For longer-distance transport, the most appropriate position should be chosen according to the mattress construction.

What Should You Consider When Moving a Sprung Mattress?

The most important consideration when moving a sprung mattress is to avoid folding it or bending it excessively in a way that places stress on the internal spring system. Traditional sprung and pocket spring mattresses are designed to function within a particular structural plane. Folding the mattress sharply to fit through a narrow doorway, keeping it bent for a long period or placing heavy loads on top of it can disturb the spring arrangement. Over time, this may lead to an uneven surface, unwanted noise, loss of support or deformation in particular areas. Unless the manufacturer specifically states that the mattress can be folded, a sprung mattress should be transported as close to its natural shape as possible.

Protecting the edge support is also important. Concentrated pressure on the sides, forcing the mattress through a narrow opening or trapping it tightly between heavy items inside a vehicle can distort the edge structure. When securing a sprung mattress with straps, they should not be tightened so much that they compress or crush the mattress. The aim is to prevent movement, not to deform the structure. Once transport is complete, the mattress should be placed on a flat support surface and checked for any unusual sagging, bending or visible deformation before it is used.

How Can a Mattress Be Protected During Transport?

The most effective way to protect a mattress during transport is to reduce the risk of physical impact, dirt, moisture and excessive pressure at the same time. The entire mattress should be enclosed in a durable protective cover, and vulnerable corners or edges can be reinforced with cardboard or other soft protective materials where necessary. The mattress should never be dragged along the floor, and the outer fabric should be kept away from hard surfaces such as walls, stair rails and vehicle doors. In wet or humid weather, the mattress should not be left exposed outdoors, as even a small tear in the packaging can allow moisture to reach the fabric.

The position of the mattress inside the vehicle is equally important. Sharp-edged furniture should not be placed directly beside it, heavy objects should not be stacked on top, and the mattress should be secured so that it cannot slide backwards and forwards during the journey. If straps are used, they should be tightened only enough to hold the mattress in place without crushing the surface. Once the move is complete, the packaging should be removed carefully and the mattress inspected before being placed in its new position. Allowing it to air briefly can also help disperse any slight moisture or enclosed-packaging odour that may have developed during transport.
